Semaglutide is the active ingredient in several products. Reading about the molecule is useful, but treatment decisions depend on the specific product, formulation, approved use, and jurisdiction. A familiar brand name or a widely shared weight-loss percentage does not resolve those distinctions.
Current status is product-specific
Wegovy is an approved weight-management product in the US and EU. The current EMA record includes weekly injection and daily tablets, with formulation-specific age restrictions. Ozempic’s product record describes its diabetes use. In March 2026, FDA approved higher-dose Wegovy HD for specified adults. These records should be checked separately rather than treating all semaglutide products as interchangeable. EMA Wegovy, EMA Ozempic, FDA Wegovy HD approval.
What STEP 1 established
STEP 1 studied once-weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, without diabetes. At 68 weeks, mean weight change was −14.9% with semaglutide and −2.4% with placebo, with lifestyle intervention in both groups. The trial establishes an average result for that study design, not a prediction for a different formulation, duration, or individual. STEP 1 original trial.
Weight and cardiovascular outcomes are different questions
SELECT studied adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity without diabetes. It tested major cardiovascular events rather than using weight loss alone as a substitute for a health outcome. Its findings should not be generalized to people without the cardiovascular history required for enrollment. SELECT trial.
This distinction matters when comparing products. One study’s weight-loss result and another study’s cardiovascular result cannot be compressed into a universal score. Ask which outcome your clinician is aiming to improve, and whether the evidence concerns a population like yours.
A label is also a safety document
The US Wegovy label includes important contraindications and warnings, including the thyroid C-cell tumor boxed warning and risks involving the digestive system. Safety is broader than whether nausea feels tolerable. The exact product information should be reviewed with a clinician, including pregnancy plans, other medicines, and planned procedures. Do not use an educational comparison to convert doses between semaglutide products or switch between oral and injectable formulations. The route and formulation matter. An updated approval does not mean an older trial tested that newer presentation.
Questions worth bringing to care
- Which product and formulation are we discussing, and for which approved use?
- What evidence is most relevant to my health history?
- How will tolerability, nutrition, and treatment response be followed?
- What should I do if the product becomes unavailable or I need a planned procedure?
Keep the current label and the relevant trial together. The label tells you the authorized use and safety requirements; the trial helps explain the evidence and its limits. Neither supplies a guaranteed personal outcome.
